Run for the Roses

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Every year on the first Friday in May, The Sandhills Childrens’ Center holds “The Run for the Roses”. An annual fundraiser with some of the areas best restaurants and chefs giving away their extraordinary food and wine. I’ve been involved for the past 5 years and I always really look forward to being there in the midst of such a wonderful cause giving away cake and goodies for such a great cause.

This is the top of the cake. All of the flowers and details you see here are made out of sugar. Time consuming but a lot of fun and very rewarding.

Holding my breath as I place the sugar flower vase on top.

I was awarded a bronze medal in an American Culinary Federation (ACF) competition for in Raleigh on the 20th of January 2009. All of the roses and detail are made out of sugar. It took about 60 hours to make but was well worth the time as I had so much fun doing it. The judge was an ACF Certified Master Baker and he gave me some fantastic critique so next time I enter I will be able to improve my showpiece.
